Lesson Plan #1
Zoe Isabella Moon
Lesson Title: Under the Sea: Ocean Creations from Found Materials
Grade Level: Second
Elements of Art: Texture, Color, Shape
Lesson Objective: Students will repurpose found objects and recycled materials to create a mixed-media aquatic animal. This will be achieved by filling an animal outline with objects to represent color and texture.
What, How, Why?: Students will repurpose recycled materials to create a new piece of art. Students will collect found and recycled materials and use them to fill in the outline of an ocean animal, learning an alternative way to “color” in the image rather than using traditional materials such as markers or pencils. This lesson guides students to think creatively and outside of the box as well as to reduce waste by reusing materials.
Content Standard: 2.VA: Cr2.3 Repurpose found objects to make a new artwork or design.
Materials:
-To present the lesson: Teacher Sample, Canva Presentation
-To complete the project: Recycled Materials/Found Objects, Glue, Ocean Animal Cutouts, Scissors, Magazines, Scrap Paper
Demonstration: Students will get an introduction to the project through a Canva Presentation, including a brief lesson overview, directions, and a teacher sample to help guide students how possible materials could be used. There will be steps presented on how to fill the ocean animal outline by showing methods of layering and filling out the outline.
The materials as well as the ocean animal cutouts will be provided on tables for students to choose from, and directions will be given both visually and orally. Students will be encouraged to think outside of the box with the use of different colors and textures while repurposing materials to create their new piece of artwork.
Differentiation / UDL (Universal Design for Learning): Instructions will be read aloud as well as displayed visually, a teacher sample will be provided, pre-cut materials and found objects will be available, students’ choice of animal outline and materials, and a hands-on approach to support all learning styles.
